Understanding Eye Nutritional Supplements With Your College Station Optometrist

These days you'll find an enormous number of "nutriceutical" or nutritional supplements on the market. Not all of these supplements are strictly necessary for health and wellness, but some of them hold key benefits for specific purposes -- including vision health and eye disease management. Our eye doctor at Crystal Vision Center in College Station, Dr. Sherri Brice, can help you take full advantage of the power of nutrients to help with such diverse eye issues as dry eye, macular degeneration and cataracts.

Nutrients And Vision Health

Nutrients are essential natural tools used by the body for various purposes, from unleashing energy and repairing damage to maintaining cellular and metabolic processes. The eyes need good nutrition just as the rest of the body does in order to maintain their structural integrity and deliver clear vision. But it isn't always easy to get the right mix of nutrients, in the right quantities, from your daily diet, especially in this age of high-fat, low-nutrition processed foods -- and this challenge can place your eyes at risk for deficiencies. If you already have an eye disease or disorder, you may need greater quantities of key nutrients to optimize your vision health.

Fortunately, modern medicine has begun to identify which of those specific nutrients seem to have the most powerful positive effects on the eyes, giving us a tremendous new tool to use in the fight against ocular diseases. Our eye doctor can recommend nutritional supplements such as:

  • Fatty Acids - Fatty acids from fish oil and flaxseed are known to help many people suffering from dry eye syndrome. Omega-3 fatty acids in particular are helpful for controlling the irritation, itchiness and vision problems that accompany chronic dry eye syndrome. Fatty acids may also be useful in controlling or forestalling other eye conditions.

  • AREDS2 - AREDS2 is the current version of a program of eye nutritional supplements aimed at slowing the progress of macular degeneration. This program includes a precisely-measured mix of Vitamins E and C, zinc, copper, omega-3 fatty acids, and two antioxidants called lutein and zeaxanthin. Our eye doctor may prescribe this blend for you if you suffer from intermediate-stage macular degeneration.

  • Anti-Cataract Supplements - Some of the same ingredients in AREDS2 may also work to slow the progression of cataracts, a clouding of the eye's lens associated with lifelong UV exposure, certain medications, underlying health conditions and specific lifestyle factors such as smoking. Once again, you may benefit from a precise mix of Vitamins C and E, lutein and zeoxanthin along with omega-3 fatty acids.

Reviews From Our Satisfied Patients

  • "We use Anderson Optometry for all of our family’s vision needs. Recently, we had to have our youngest fitted for new glasses and he made the experience fun for her and informative for us. We know Dr. Anderson will always take good care of our family’s eye care and that’s why we wouldn’t go to anywhere else."

  • "Dr. Anderson and his staff are so patient and friendly. Dr. Anderson prescribed me glasses and I had the toughest time picking out frames. They didn’t rush, but instead made helpful suggestions and now I have an awesome pair of frames, not to mention the fact that I can see ten times better than before. You guys are the best!"
